An alternative to hobby horsing

A good alternative to hobby horsing should get kids moving, spark their imagination, and—above all—be a lot of fun, without requiring a real horse . In practice, young people are looking for something that isn’t boring, isn’t sedentary, and certainly isn’t mandatory. They want something they can control themselves, something they can lose themselves in—whether alone or with others.

Here at Animal Riding, we see every day just how strong that need is. That’s why we’ve developed ride-on animals that really move. No batteries, no buttons. Just a child, their legs, and an animal that comes to life with every step. This makes our toys more than just a game. It’s an experience. Children ride them around the house, through the living room, or even through the classroom, and stay active without even realizing it. They’re safe, sturdy, and built to last for years—exactly what you’re looking for as a parent. Think, for example, of a donkey, a unicorn, or a lion.

What makes a hobby so important for young people?

For children, a hobby is more than just a pastime. It’s something that’s all their own. Something no one forces them to do, but that they enjoy doing. It gives their day structure, especially when school gets to be too much.

A hobby also helps children learn new things without it feeling like a lesson. Drawing, building, driving, singing—it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it appeals to them. They discover their own talents, gain more self-confidence, and are better able to cope with stress. A child with a hobby is more self-assured.

The Role of a Hobby Horse in Promoting Physical Activity Through Play

A hobby horse makes exercise less of a chore and more of an adventure. Every child can make up their own story. Dressage? Jumps? A competition against friends, or just galloping through the park in their imagination? Anything is possible.

Without even realizing it, they’re improving their balance, coordination, and fitness—all with a simple hobby horse. At Animal Riding, we’ve taken this idea a step further. Our ride-on animals combine that same fun with real physical activity. No more sitting still. Children propel themselves forward and ride through the house, just like on a real horse. Only without the risk, without animals, and without a screen.

Why the hobby horse is popular again among children

You hear it more and more often from parents: kids want to play like they used to, spending a little less time in front of a screen. They want to run, jump, and use their imagination. The hobbyhorse fits right in with that.

At home, on school playgrounds, and at events, you see it more and more often. What was once simple is now taking on new forms. Children create their own obstacle courses, organize competitions, and come together in clubs where play is the focus. This shows that the hobby is alive and well, and that more and more children are enjoying it.

From a traditional hobbyhorse to an innovative ride-on toy

The classic hobby horse remains beautiful in its simplicity. But we wanted to take it a step further. After all, why just pretend to ride when you can actually ride?

At Animal Riding, we have plush animals on sturdy wheels that children use to propel themselves. No batteries. No motor. Just their own legs and imagination. It feels like riding. It looks like riding. And it keeps them active without them even realizing they’re actually exercising. Plus, they can choose their favorite animal—from horses to lions—so it truly becomes their playmate.

Happy horsing is good for children

Why hobby horsing is much more than just a passing fad in the sports world

In Finland, it started as a joke. But hobby horsing has since become a full-fledged sport. Children train seriously, work on their technique, and compete in events with judges, rules, and prizes.

It’s about more than just imitating others. It requires strength, stamina, and concentration. Young people design their own routines, practice daily, and work on their form. Hobby horsing isn’t just a pastime—for many, it’s a passion, a place to grow and express themselves.

Competing over an obstacle or on a creative course

The children make up the rules themselves. They build their own obstacles, come up with creative routes, and try to make ever-higher jumps. It’s all about agility, speed, and daring.

Our Animal Riding ride-on toys fit right in with this. They aren’t meant for actual competitions, but rather to encourage that same urge to move and play. Children steer on their own, maintain their balance, and practice controlling the ride. It feels real, it moves real, and they really learn from it. No screen, no batteries—just by playing.
