How does a hobby horse competition work?

A hobby horse competition is a sporting activity in which participants perform various disciplines using a hobby horse. Just like in real equestrian sports, events such as dressage, jumping, and barrel racing are practiced—but in an imaginative and creative way. Hobby horsing originated in Finland and is growing worldwide, with competitions becoming increasingly popular.

The disciplines—from dressage to show jumping

A hobby horse competition often consists of several events. Dressage involves performing a predetermined routine with specific movements, similar to equestrian dressage. Jumping involves navigating a course with obstacles, where precision and speed are key. Some competitions also include creative events such as freestyle or Western-style, in which participants decorate their own hobby horses and put on a personalized performance.

Rating in Competitions

A judging panel evaluates the participants on various aspects. In dressage, the judges assess precision, posture, and the execution of the movements. In show jumping, speed, coordination, and the ability to complete the course correctly are evaluated. Creativity also plays a major role, especially in events where the design of the hobby horse and the performance itself are taken into account.

Participating in a hobby horse competition

The essentials for a hobby horse competition are simple. The most important things are your own hobby horse, a suitable saddle or halter, and any accessories. People of all ages can participate, with clubs or stables like Hobbyhorsestal Maaike organizing events. It offers an accessible and lively way to enjoy sports, creativity, and imagination.

Accessibility of Hobby Horsing

Hobby horsing and hobby horse competitions are affordable and accessible. They combine athletic challenge with creativity and offer participants the opportunity to experience their passion for horses in a unique way. The sport of hobby horsing is growing rapidly and attracting more and more participants, from beginners to experienced hobby horsers.
