What are the rules for Hobby Horse competitions?

At first glance, Hobby Horsing seems like a playful activity, but there are clear rules that apply during official competitions. These rules ensure that the sport remains fair and safe and that participants know exactly what to expect.

Rules for Jumping with a Hobby Horse

In jumping, the goal is to ride your hobby horse over an obstacle without touching it or knocking it over. Each participant gets several attempts, and any mistakes are recorded. Just like in real equestrian sports, the obstacles are set higher and higher to determine who can go the farthest.

Dressage Tests on a Hobby Horse

Dressage in Hobby Horsing It’s all about posture, precision, and performing the required figures. The competitor performs a routine to music or in silence. The judges evaluate the execution of transitions, figures, and the expressiveness of the movements. Just like in equestrian dressage, the rider receives points for each component.

Obstacle Course and Cross-Country Races

In some competitions, there is a complete course with obstacles, slaloms, and other challenges. The rules are often simple: You must complete the course in the correct order while making as few mistakes as possible. Sometimes time is also a factor, especially in the more athletic events.

General Competition Rules

In addition to the specific sections, there are also general rules that apply almost everywhere.
✓ Each participant uses their own Hobby Horse
✓ Safety comes first, so no physical contact between participants is allowed
✓ The jury decides who the winner is and awards points for performance and creativity
✓ Respect for fellow participants is always a top priority

The rules of Hobby Horse competitions are very similar to those of equestrian sports, but have been adapted for the stick horse. Attention is paid to jumping, dressage, and show jumping, but also to posture, neatness, and sportsmanship. This creates a sport that can be practiced seriously while remaining very accessible to everyone.
