Riding a pony as a toddler is a great way to start a love of horses

Riding a pony is a great way for young children to get acquainted with horses, exercise, and being outdoors. Many parents wonder: Is my toddler ready to ride a pony? The answer is: absolutely, as long as there’s proper supervision and a calm pony.

Pony Rides for Young Children

For younger children, ages 2 to 4, special pony-riding sessions are often organized at a riding school, a farm, or a stable. This isn’t a full riding lesson, but more of a guided walk around the grounds. A child sits on the pony’s back, with a well-fitting saddle, and is held by an adult, or the pony is led by an adult on a lead rope.

Just going for a walk with a pony is often exciting enough. It’s mainly about having fun, building trust, and making that first connection with animals. Some children fall in love with ponies right away, while others need a little time to get used to them. And that’s perfectly fine.

At what age can children start riding horses?

Although children can often start riding in a playful way as early as age 4, formal riding lessons usually begin at age 6 or 7. In the meantime, you can take your child to a stable to pet, feed, and even brush and groom the horses. Vaulting—gymnastics exercises performed on a horse—is also a fun way to help children get used to balance and movement.

Going for a walk together

Many parents turn it into an outing: going for a walk with their daughter or son while he or she rides the pony. Mom or Dad holds the pony by the halter and walks alongside. This can be done in the yard, in the paddock, or even on a short outdoor ride along a safe route.

For toddlers, it’s especially important to build their confidence. Let them feed, groom, and care for the horse to build a bond. And: don’t force anything. No trot, no gallop—just a leisurely walk around the arena is already a great experience.

Fun comes first

For your child, having fun is the most important thing. Through play, they learn what riding is all about, how to interact with ponies, and how to use their legs to stay balanced. Even if your child is still too young for a real group lesson, a half-hour walk on a pony is already a special experience.

And honestly? A love for horses often starts at a young age—during that first ride on that sweet pony, or when they were first allowed to pet a horse, or when they came across rabbits at the stable.

Ask about the options

Would you like to give it a try with your child? Ask at a local riding school about the options. Many places offer special programs for preschoolers and toddlers, where you, as a parent, can simply walk alongside your child. It’s a wonderful way to experience something new together with your child.

Would you rather start off on the safe side? Then come meet our hobby horsing ponies. Not ready to ride a real horse yet? We have a horse on wheels —or even a unicorn on wheels. Of course, you can also take a look at all our ride-on toys.
